John, have you read Lee Levine's *The Ancient Synagogue: The First Thousand Years* (2nd ed.: Yale: Yale University Press, 2005)? It builds upon his work in the essay Adams cited in his JBOMS paper, and provides very strong evidence for pre-exilic "proto-synagogues." If you have not, you might want to put the text onto your "must read some day" list (I offer a summary in my review of Ross Anderson's *Understanding the BOM* in FARMS 21/2, which will be published soon).

Maps are mostly a modern thing. Clearly, Mormon had an idea of where many of the places of which he wrote were located. John Sorenson has discussed this in his book, Mormon's Map.

The Nephites used gold and silver as a means of exchange, but they did not have coinage, which was invented about the time Lehi left his homeland to come to America.

I read the Book of Mormon many years before the subtitle was added and the contents were the same as now, describing Nephite history and teachings. Where did you come up with the idea that the book itself has changed just because a subtitle was added? You need to read the book!

There were two varieties of reformed Egyptian at the time Lehi left Jerusalem, One was called by the Greeks hieratic (meaning "priestly"), the other demotic (meaning "popular" (i.e., of the people). Each was a cursive, with demotic being the most cursive. But the Nephites reformed it even further, as Moroni states in Mormon 9:32-34. Again, where are you getting such strange and incorrect ideas?

The word templum is Latin and refers to sacred space. We have many Latin words in English. The KJV translators used it to denote the sacred building constructed in Jerusalem by Solomon.

Do you want miracles or archaeological evidence? I suggest that you begin by reading the following book:

Donald W. Parry, Daniel C. Peterson, and John W. Welch, Echoes and Evidences of the Book of Mormon (Provo: FARMS, 2002), posted at

We agree that Jesus is the only one on whom we can rely for salvation. But you seem not to be aware that the Book of Mormon also testifies of Jesus Christ. Technically, there is no such thing as "Mormonism." We are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we acknowledge Christ as the head of our Church. Mormon is the man who, in the late fourth century AD, abridged the records of his people and called it the Book of Mormon. I suggest you read it before you judge it.

I got a head start. I began immersing myself in the scriptures 60 years ago, at the age of 8, and continue to read them daily. In addition, my academic studies have taken me into the history, culture, and languages of the ancient Near East, and I lived in the Middle East for more than 8 years. Most Latter-day Saints who know the Book of Mormon well don't know the Bible and it has been my experience that Christians in general don't know the Bible well, except for the various "proof texts" they have been fed over the years. I'm glad I can help.
